A. K. Lohithadas

A. K. Lohithadas is a prolific screenwriter and director in Malayalam cinema, known for his rich, detailed, and realistic screenplays.

Biography

Lohithadas (or ‘Lohi’, as he is often referred to) was born Ambazhathil Karunakaran Lohithadas in Kerala. He showed an initial interest was in short-stories, but failed to make a mark in that genre. He soon moved into Malayalam theater in 1986 when his debut script was accepted for the stage by the legendary theater personality Thoppil Bhasi. Bhasi’s CPI party backed drama troupe, the highly successful ‘Kerala People’s Arts Club’, produced the play, leading to a state award for Lohithadas.
Fresh with the play’s commercial and critical success, Lohithadas moved to Malayalam Cinema by writing for director Sibi Malayil. His first movie screenplay Thaniavarthanam was directed by Malayil and went on to be a success. The Sibi Malayil-Lohithadas combination would later produce several memorable Malayalam movies.

Movies

Lohithdas movies are well known for its deep and realistic characterization and are often grim depiction of contemporary Kerala life. In spite of its serious subjects, they have been highly successful in the state. His movies lay less emphasis on plot or commercial gimmicks (such as songs, dances or unrealistic slapstick humour), and, instead, display a more character-oriented approach. He is a prolific writer, often writing nearly four screenplays a year. He turned director with his critically acclaimed 1997 film Bhoothakannadi (The Magnifying Glass). However, his later directorial ventures have only been moderately successful.

Writer-director Lohithadas passes away!

Noted writer-director Lohithadas died today (June 28) around 10.50 in the morning, due to a massive heart attack at a private hospital in Kochi.

Ambazhathil Karunakaran Lohithadas (A. K. Lohithadas) was undoubtedly one of the finest script writers in Malayalam. He could be put in the same pedestal as the greats like M.T Vasudevan Nair, Thoppil Bhasi and Padmarajan.

Lohi died young at 54 and has written some of the finest scripts seeped in realism and had a human touch and pulled at your heart strings.

Like M.T. Vasudevan Nair and late Bharathan, Lohi was a script writer who understood the pulse of the Malayalees and his early films with Sibi Malayil were classic like Thaniavarthanam, Amaram, Kireedam, Dasaratham, His Highness Abdulla, Kamaladalam, before the director bug caught him.

All his early films had a Kerala milieu and told stories about the social and political issues prevailing in the society.

As a director he was mediocre, as he had to make commercial compromises. Some of his memorable films as a director were Bhoothakannadi, Kasturimaan, Aarayannangalude Veedu, Nivediyam.

Said Mammootty: " Lohi's untimely death is a personal loss for me. He had understood my strengths and weaknesses and created characters that suited me. He told human stories which were rooted in Kerala culture "

Mammootty in Sohanlal's debut movie

Mammootty has reportedly agreed to act in the debut directorial venture of Sohanlal, who had been an associate to hit-maker director Shafi. (This of course is not the Sohanlal who had made his directorial debut a few months back with the offbeat 'Orkkuka Vallappozhum').

The film, details about which are yet to be finalized, will feature script by the Sachi-Sethu duo, who had earlier scripted the Shafi-directed blockbuster 'Chocolate'. Sohanlal's Mammootty-starrer will presumably be an entertainer, with due emphasis being given to key ingredients like sentiments, humour, romance at all.

About The Movie

Superstar Mammootty and veteran director Ranjith once again team up to bring back yet another superhit movie called “Paleri Manikyam“. They have worked together as a team for four films like Black, Kaiyoppu, Prajapathi and Nasrani. This will also be the first time that Ranjith is going to make a film that is not scripted by himself.

The film is also very special as several new faces will be introduced in the movie and that too stage performers as the movie needs a particular slang which can only be done by stage performers.

The movie is based on a novel as explained earlier. In the movie Mammootty is introduced as an officer who tries to solve a murder case that is almost 53 years old. A girl named Manikyam was brutally raped and also murdered on the 11th day of her marriage. But no one was able to find out the guilty person and so the case was closed. The incident took place in a place called “Paleri”, near Calicut. The director has decided to show a part of the life style of the early 1950’s. This was why he had to search out for professional stage performers as they were the only persons who could do those roles.

The movie will have it’s shooting in Paleri, Delhi and also some parts of Palakkad. The movie is expexted to release by the end of 2009.
