Ranjit & Mammootty together again!

Writer, director and actor Ranjit is going to produce another film under his Capital Theatres banner with his favourite star Mammootty. The film has been titled Paleri Manickam - Oru Paatira Kolapathakithinte Katha .

Ranjit says: "As the title indicates it is a murder mystery. Mammootty will play the lead and the rest of the people will be from the theatre background or those who have worked in stage plays. The film is an adaption of the story by the same title published in the Mathrubhoomi weekly a few years back"

The story of the film is based on a murder that took place 51 years back (1958) at Paleri near Kozhikode. Mammootty plays a writer who comes from Delhi in search of his roots who investigates the murder.

For the first time Ranjit is going to direct a film whose script is written by somebody else. And he is going to have unknown new faces to play supporting characters in this film which will also be a different experience for the director. He has invited applicants from the stage to play the characters and those who are selected will undergo a crash course under Murali Menon drama camp.

Hats off to Ranjith for doing Paleri Manickam - Oru Paatira Kolapathakithinte Katha , based on a novel at a time when Malayalam cinema is totally away from good novel and literature.

Ee Pattanathil Bhootham - Preview

Malayalam superstar Mammootty's upcoming Malayalam film Ee Pattanathil Bhootham is directed by Johny Antony of CID Moosa, Kochi Raajaavu and Thuruppugulaan fame. As the name suggests, Ee Pattanathil Bhootham is a fantasy-filled adventure, donning Mammootty in a double role as a bike jumper named Jimmy in a circus company and a friendly ghost! The film has been scripted by Siby K. Thomas and Udayakrishnan, the hit pair of blockbuster Twenty:20.

The story revolves around an orphan Jimmy brought up by Krishnettan (Innocent), who runs a street circus group. Jimmy rescues a couple of street children from some goons and they become part of the street circus group, which is later merged with a commercial circus company, run by Philipose (Janaradhanan) and his daughter Ancy (Kavya Madhavan), a management graduate. While Jimmy is away, the kids again run into some trouble. However, they are rescued by a ghost who only they can see. The film develops from this point.

Produced under the banner of Hi Bright Movie Creations, the film has cinematography by Azhagappan and music by debutant music director Shaan Rahman. Kavya Madhavan has already appeared in six films with Mammootty, but never as his heroine. Also in the cast are Jagathy Sreekumar, Innocent, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Salim Kumar and others. The film has plenty of graphics and special effects.

Vande Mataram: Shooting completed

Malayalam superstar Mammootty and Tamil 'action king' Arjun team's much-anticipated bilingual Vande Mataram (Aruvadai in Tamil), directed by T. Arvind, has completed its shooting. The films climax was shot in Sengundram with the lead actors and several junior artists.

Director Arvind expressed his happiness that Vande Mataram has fulfilled his expectations and come out well. Describing the films story in a single line, the director said Vande Mataram is an investigative action thriller, the story of a group of police officers who go hunting for a group of terrorists who have been creating havoc in the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border.

Produced by Henry with a whopping budget of 14 cores under the banner of Pankaj Productions, the film begins with a scenes showing that the central investigative agency (RAW) finds out that Malik, head of a terrorist group, has crossed the international border and entered India to execute deadly explosions in South India. Gopi Krishnan (Mammootty), Southern zone command director of the Intelligence bureau, is assigned the task of tracing the plans of the organization and stopping them from creating any damage.

Gopi Krishnan forms a core team with support from Anwar Hussain (Arjun) who joins the group on deputation from the State police. The execution of 'Operation Malik' forms the climax of the movie. The film will feature two heroines, Sneha as a pilot and wife of Gopi Krishnan and Sharadha Arya as an ornithologist. Deepak J.D. makes his debut as the deadly villain.

The action sequences and stunts were cinematographed by stunt director Anal Arasu. K. Santhosh has written the dialogues for the Malayalam version. The five songs in the movie, penned by Gireesh Puthencherry and Vayalar Sharatchandra Varma, are set to music by Vidyasagar. The Tamil verses are written by P. Vijay, Vairamuthu and Yugabarathi. Cinematography is by Vetri and Rajesh Yadav.

Konkona may team up with Mammootty in Kannada film

He is on cloud nine after signing on Mammootty for "Shikari", the Malayalam superstar's first Kannada film. And director Abhay Simha now wants to rope in Bollywood actress Konkona Sen Sharma for the female lead.

"Konkona is busy with her Hindi projects, but she was impressed with the script. We hope that we would be able to get her dates once the project rolls," said Simha, who received a lot of appreciation for his directorial debut "Gubbachchigalu", about the journey of city kids to search for sparrows.

Explaining how Mammootty came on board, Simha told IANS: "One of my batchmates from FTII (Film & Television Institute Of India, Pune) was working as a cinematographer for a Mammootty film. Through him I got the telephone number of Mammootty's secretary. I called the secretary and told him I have an interesting script for the star. Within a few hours I got a call from Mammootty, who asked me to e-mail the script. I immediately sent the content of the script on e-mail.

"A few days later, Mammootty's secretary called me again and asked me to call the actor personally. Two days later I met Mammootty and he agreed to work in the film and said he would finalise the dates in a few days. When he agreed to do my Kannada film, I was on cloud nine."

Mammootty has acted in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu films, but he hasn't worked in any Kannada film because none of the scripts impressed him. So "Shikari", which is about the systematic exploitation of nature and environment, will be the superstar's first Kannada film.

"The screenplay has some novel features. When I was writing the script, I had always thought about Mammootty sir," said Simha.

"Shikari" is being produced by Mangalore-based industrialist N.R. Shetty, who had earlier made "Shubham" with Shivadhwaj in the lead.

Simha believes in good cinema and his passion for filmmaking grew after he made a 45-minute documentary on the psychology of twins, triplets and quadruplets. He has 19 documentaries, 10 short films and two music videos to his credit.

"I believe in good cinema, which is both entertaining and sensible. No, I don't believe in abstract films because a film has to reach out to the common man," said Simha.

Well-known Kannada director Girish Kasaravalli is Simha's source of inspiration.

"I derive all my inspiration from him. He too is a student of FTII. I have seen all his films and I'm awe-struck by his brilliance. I was motivated by him and have now decided to concentrate on Kannada films rather than work in Bollywood," said Simha.

'Sarkar' in Malayalam

The latest buzz in Mollywood is that Filmfare Award-winning Hindi director Ram Gopal Varma's dramatic thriller Sarkar (2005), starring Bollywood biggies Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Kay Kay Menon and Katrina Kaif, is to be remade in Malayalam by debutant director Sheikh, a long-time assistant of Shaji Kailas, and Malayalam superstar Mammootty will take on the lead role (played by Amitabh Bachchan in the original).

Sarkar revolved around a don, Mumbai-based billionaire Subhash Nagre alias Sarkar (Amitabh Bachchan), who lives in a palatial house with his wife (Supriya Pathak), two sons Vishnu (Kay Kay Menon) and Shankar (Abhishek Bachchan) and his daughter-in-law Amrita Vishnu (Rukhsar). One day, a Dubai-based don, Rasheed (Zakir Hussain) tries to strike a deal with Sarkar, but he promptly refuses on moral grounds and also forbids him from doing it himself. Later, Rasheed tries to eliminate Sarkar's supremacy with the help of Sarkar's former associate Silver Mani (Srinivasa Rao Kota) and Swami Virendra (Jeeva).

In course of time, they trap Sarkar by assassinating a righteous, upright, political leader Motilal Khurana (Anupam Kher), an outspoken critic of Sarkar. Everyone, including his elder son Vishnu, believes that Sarkar is guilty but Shankar has deep faith in his father. Sarkar is arrested and jailed. Shankar then takes over the position of his father temporarily. Sarkar is later acquitted and remains bedridden.

Meanwhile, Silver Mani, Swami and Rasheed try to convince Vishnu, a foul-mouthed producer, to murder his father. Vishnu was previously thrown out of Sarkar's house because he had murdered a Bollywood actor for having an affair with actress Sapna (Nisha Kothari), whom Vishnu wanted to keep as mistress.

Vishnu returns home, pretending to have repented. When he approaches Sarkar at night to murder him, Shankar foils his plan and kills him. Shankar later eliminates all his enemies, including the Chief Minister Madan Rathore (Deepak Shirke) who also had a part in the attempt to end Sarkar and his rule. The closing scenes show people approaching Shankar for justice as his father apparently retires.

Love in Singapore-Review

The film is about 'Machu' (Mammootty), who rose to financial heights after starting his life as a scrap dealer. He lives in a posh house in a posh locality. One day, he sees a beautiful girl in a soap and talcum powder commercial and falls in love with her. To fulfill his dream to marry her, Machu follows the advice of his neighbour, business man Andrews Pereira (Nedumudi Venu), who gently persuades Machu to invest his earnings in stocks. Next, Pereira vanishes to Singapore with Machu's money. Left with no other options, Machu leaves for Singapore in hot pursuit of his lost money. When he confronts Pereira there, Machu proposes to marry Pereira's daughter Diana (Navneet Kaur) as compensation for his financial loss. The second half of the film is all about Machu's tricks to win Diana over.

Mammootty has tried his level best to save the show, but in vain. The script is illogical with a lot of ambiguities and incredible twists. For instance, the film gives no convincing explanation why villain Nedumudi Venu cheats Machu and escapes to Singapore. Perhaps shooting in Singapore is a reason for the director duo, which also produces the film.

The majority of the sequences are contrived and solely for cooking up some 'funny moments' with the clichéd dialects of comedians Suraj Venjaramoodu, Salimkumar and Bijukuttan. Debutante heroine Navneet Kour as Diana has nothing to offer with a very weak character development. The only relief comes from some foot-tapping numbers by music director Suresh Peters, but even those songs fail to put the movie on track. The other technical crew members, including Sanjeev Sankar (camera) and Boban (art) have done their routine jobs. All in all, we can undoubtedly say Love in Singapore is one of the avoidable efforts by the director duo in recent times.

Mammootty's Kannada Film coming soon

Mamookka is sure going places these days. Mammootty has reportedly given his consent to act in a film in Kannada, directed by Abhay Simha, who had made his debut with ‘Gubbachchigalu’, a much acclaimed film that’s being screened at many international festivals.
The Abhay Simha-Mammootty film, titled ‘Shikaari’, will be produced by N.R. Shetty and will have story and script by the director himself.
‘Shikaari’ will feature music by Anmol Bhave and cinematography by Vikram Shrivastava (both of whom were also part of the ‘Gubbachchigalu’ team). Grapevine has it that Konkona Sen Sharma is being considered as the leading lady and that she is likely to accept the offer. We are waiting for confirmation and more details.

PazhassiRaja for Onam?

The long in the making Mammootty magnum opus Pazhassi Raja which was finally scheduled for release for Vishu 2009, has now been postponed.

The film produced by Gokulam Gopalan, written by the legendary M.T Vasudevan Nair and directed by veteran Hariharan was one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year. The film has Mammootty in the lead role along with Kaniha, Tamil actor Sarath Kumar, plays the role of his trusted commander-in-chief named Dalapathy. The others in the cast are Manoj.K Jayan, Kalabhavan Mani, Suman and Padmapriya.
The biopic tells the story of the legendary ruler and warrior Pazhassi Raja the 'Lion of Kerala', who took on the British in the forests of Malabar in the 18 century. He is regarded by historians as the first freedom fighter of India. The movie will showcase his heroic fights against the British in the jungles of Wayanad during the 1790s.

Now the entire shoot of the film is over. The post production work of the film is to start in Chennai and will have a lot of special effects and graphics.

Added to that the maestro Ilayaraja has composed songs for the film and will start his re-recording only after Editor Sreekar Prasad completes his editing. All this will take three or four months, hence the delay in release.
It looks like Pazhassi Raja has been pushed to Onam 2009.
